Set Design: God’s labour

Projection  mapping Interactive set
Dec 2014

Used as the primary set for the theatrical rendering of a poem by Sri Aurobindo called “A God’s Labor”.

This set was projection mapped upon by 2 projectors with abstract expressive visuals made in Adobe After Effects to convey the powerful and ephemeral emotions in the poem.

The space was first modeled to scale and then a parametric algorithm was used to iterate options in grasshopper 3d. Translucent sheets of plastic were used. They allow light from the projectors to glow through them, creating an ethereal feeling.

Set design: Viziers of Bassora

Used as the props for the play “Viziers of Bassora” by Sri Aurobindo, this set was inspired by the intricate carvings of the Islamic tradition. As the play had many different settings, I opted to rather design two solid elements whose positions relative to each other defined the setting.
Made with laser cut paper and attached onto a welded steel frame, these two arches were 5m tall.
When lit from behind the arches became visually light allowing other elements in the play to be highlighted.  Mounted on wheels, these arches could be arranged to in many different ways making for a minimal and versatile set.

Set Design: Perseus the Deliverer

Voronoi disintegrating pillars
Dec 2015

Used as the primary props for the play “ Perseus the Deliverer” by Sri Aurobindo, these giant 6m tall pillars disintegrated as blocks were removed from them, mirroring the lead character’s mental degradation as he loses his sanity in the course of the play. It was a dynamic set design that set the tone for the modern rendition of the play.

Due to the modern nature of the representation of the play, I opted to design a contemporary aesthetic that was designed by modern methods.
The sea and it’s gods were of great importance in the play. Inspired by the froth in a violent ocean, the voronoi algorithm chosen mimics closely packed bubbles. The disintegration represented the descent of the lead character into madness, and on a subtler level the calming of the violent oceans and fall of the influence of the sea gods.

Designed parametrically in Grasshopper3D, these moving pillars consist of 150 unique digitally fabricated paper blocks attached to a steel frame.
